Uncertain. Has been linked to uncial Latin G or Runic α (/j/) and even to a cursive Ancient Greek Ξ (X, βxiβ). SnΓ¦dal favours the Latin origin, possibly invented after Wulfila. Neither the Latin nor the Greek alphabets at the time of the introduction of the Gothic one had graphemes corresponding to the distinction of j and w from i and u.

π΅ α The sixth letter of the Gothic alphabet, representing /kΚ·/, with a numerical value of 6. Probably from Ancient Greek Ο (W) (digamma) in a late form such as , ; or from Ο (Q) (koppa), given its similarity to a truncated π (90).
How the 27-position alphabet value works
The ancient letter-number system uses 27 positions arranged in three groups of nine: 1β9, 10β90, and 100β900.
To compare English letters with this system, Samekhi/Xi is counted as the missing 15th position between N and O. It occupies the value 60 even though it is not present in the modern English alphabet.
Therefore, AβN use positions 1β14, OβZ use positions 16β27, and each letter receives the number belonging to its position. For example, W falls at position 24, giving it a value of 600.
